The first ever comprehensive catalogue of Banksy's print editions, from 2002 to 2022. Known as Banksy, the British street artist, political activist and film director has been making art for over three decades. However, while Banksy's street art is designed to stay in the public domain, he has also been creating and selling commercial artworks since 2002. As well as making his art accessible to a wider audience, the prints often expand on themes explored in Banksy's other pieces, such as war, consumerism and the abuse of authority. At intentionally affordable prices accessible to people of all backgrounds, he initially offered both signed and unsigned versions of his print editions for just a couple of hundred pounds. It is essential to appreciate these prints in order to fully understand Banksy's artistic expression and evolution over the past two decades. Organized by release year, with insightful commentary, essential details about each edition and faithful reproductions, Banksy: The Prints will become the ultimate resource for exploring Banksy's printed works. It will allow a more complete and well-rounded understanding of Banksy's visual language, his motivations and his politics.

Discover the absorbing art of green-wood carving with Samuel Alexander's skills, projects and techniquesand his reflections on whittling in a busy world Whittling is an immersive and peaceful form of woodcarving which rewards calm focus with beautiful objects. Samuel Alexander shows how to responsibly source fresh green wood, introduces the basic techniques for using your knife, and demonstrates how to carve unique objects. But, sharing his own story, he also reveals the other benefit that whittling can bring you: a time of happy focus that's free from pressure and profoundly relaxing. After covering the basics of how to get started, you can work through a range of step-by-step projects at your own pace. Working with the grain, you'll create tactile curves and textures, slowly revealing the character of each piece as you whittle. Samuel's projects progress in difficulty to challenge your new skills, and include brushes, simple buttons, household hooks, a toy car, an apple ornament, spoons, vases, and beads. Finally, he shows how to finish the keepsakes you've whittled with oil, and how to maintain your tools. Throughout the book, Samuel's thoughtful prose also encourages you to find another state of mind as you whittle, and discover the deep calm which arrives as you focus on small movements and personal creativity.

A thorough international survey of the body's role in contemporary art, fully revised and updated. The Body in Contemporary Art presents an international survey of art made since 2000 that takes the body as its focus. From painting and sculpture to installation, video art and performance, O'Reilly reveals the myriad ways in which the body has inspired a generation of artists. The al-Sabah Collection, Kuwait, includes a remarkable array of textiles from the Islamic world, ranging widely in form, function and place of origin. Textiles of the Early Islamic Caliphates focuses on a group of tiraz and tiraz-style textiles produced before the thirteenth century CE, mainly in the central Islamic lands. Tiraz textiles - the word tiraz can be traced back to the Persian word for 'embroidery' - were highly valued in the early Islamic world. Inscribed with sacred invocations and the name of the ruling caliph, together with the names of administrators, the type of workshop in which the textile was made, the workshop's location and the year of manufacture, these textiles provide an invaluable window into the political, administrative and religious life of early Islam, as well as various traditions of textile production. Other textiles of the period, similar in style but uninscribed, were decorated with colourful medallions, depicting animals and other motifs. The large majority of the surviving fragments of tiraz textiles, which were originally given as robes of honour to courtiers and ambassadors, have been found in Egyptian tombs: most of the textiles examined in this book once belonged to burial outfits from the diverse religious communities in Egypt during the early Islamic period. Featuring more than 180 textiles from The al-Sabah Collection, some never published before, this volume provides authoritative analysis not only of the textiles themselves, but also of the historical and cultural context in which they were produced. With hundreds of illustrations, including specially commissioned macrophotography, Textiles of the Early Islamic Caliphates is a landmark publication that will appeal to scholars and general readers alike.

A celebration of the rich 20th- and 21st-century tradition of screenprinting as a means of artistic expression, from its commercial origins in 1920s America to the limited-edition screenprints of the post-war period and today, by artists such as Andy Warhol, Bridget Riley and Damien Hirst. Screenprints: A History, the first title in the V&A's new series on the history and practice of printmaking, is a celebration of the fine-art applications of this versatile medium, from the commercial origins of the screenprinting process in 1920s America, its pivotal role in 1960s Pop and Op Art among artists such as Andy Warhol and Bridget Riley, through to its adoption by Damien Hirst and the YBAs of the 1990s, and its enduring presence in contemporary art. This beautifully designed, strikingly illustrated introduction will appeal to art lovers and practising artists everywhere. The origins of the screenprinting process are introduced through early artistic precursors, such as the stencil and pochoir printing in the making of Henri Matisse's Jazz, and other artists' books. Screenprinting became one of the most important techniques in the rise of artists' limited-edition fine art prints from the 1960s onwards, seen here in the work of notable figures such as Roy Lichtenstein and Eduardo Paolozzi, and contemporary artists such as Damien Hirst, who have variously engaged with the medium's commercial origins and, conversely, its capacity for a hand-made aesthetic. Special focus is given to lesser-known names who pioneered the use of the screenprint in fine art in the UK, the USA and Europe, including Francis Carr and Ben Shahn, while tracing its global spread through Africa, the Caribbean and Australasia. An illustrated, step-by-step guide to the practical process further enriches this multifaceted account. The democratic medium has further lent itself to spontaneous graphic protest, notably in the Atelier Populaire posters made in Paris in 1968, featured here and embodying screenprinting's unique qualities, rich colours and graphic impact.
