This photo book serves as a compelling firsthand visual account of my presence and active participation in the Justice for Trayvon Martin protest, which occurred on July 16th, 2013, outside the U.S. embassy. Its purpose is to ensure that the UK's involvement in the Justice for Trayvon demonstration is documented and preserved in accessible libraries rather than being confined to commercial or private archives. The book is thoughtfully divided into three sections, each exploring a different aspect:Section One: Perspectives on The Death of Trayvon Martin and RacismThis section delves into the tragic event of Trayvon Martin's death and examines the broader issue of racism. It provides diverse perspectives and insights, fostering a deeper understanding of the complex dynamics at play.Section Two: Visual Activism and Iconic Protest ImagesHere, the focus shifts to visual activism and the iconic images captured during the protest. The photographs, taken with basic digital cameras and cell phones, are intentionally presented without watermarks or captions. This decision was made to emphasize the importance of the emotions and experiences conveyed in the images, prioritizing their authenticity over technical perfection.Section Three: Race and Policing in the UKThe final section explores the topic of race and policing within the UK context. It sheds light on the broader implications of racial discrimination and its impact on law enforcement practices. By examining this issue, the book aims to contribute to a more nuanced understanding of the systemic challenges faced by marginalized communities.Throughout the book, I aim to highlight the significance of interpreting the political dress practices of black protestors. By doing so, it becomes evident how the black body's role in civil rights protests can influence our perception and comprehension of these demonstrations. The inclusion of feeling and emotion within photographic theory and practice is vital in engaging viewers as secondary witnesses, allowing them to develop an emotional connection with the events captured in the photographs. The visual experience goes beyond the purely visual, resonating with our other senses and enhancing our overall perception. In conclusion, this photo book acknowledges the profound impact of political dressing and photography on participants in anti-racism and anti-police brutality demonstrations. It recognizes the power of political signage as a means for individuals to assert control over their public appearance and narrative. By utilizing political signage as a form of institutional critique, protestors can present a narrative that is resistant to revision or dismissal by detractors or historical revisionists with a right-wing agenda. Photography serves as a crucial medium for capturing and preserving these narratives that many would otherwise seek to dismiss or erase.Through this photo book, contributes to the ongoing dialogue on racial justice, activism, and the power of visual storytelling. It is the author and photographers intention to inspire reflection, empathy, and a deeper understanding of the experiences and struggles faced by marginalized communities in their pursuit of justice.

This photo documentary book is a first-hand pictorial account of my presence and participation at the Trayvon Martin protest which took place outside the American Embassy in London March 31st 2012. The production of this historical photo document is about ensuring that the UK support for Trayvon Martin is recorded and archived in accessible libraries as opposed to only commercial or private archives. The book is broken int three sections: 1. Section One: Perspectives On The Death Trayvon Martin And Racism5 Academic Essays 2. Section Two Visual Activism And Iconic Protest Images 250 Photos 3. Section Three Race And Policing In The UK 5 Academic Essays This publication consists of images taken with a basic digital camera cell phone. The images are not watermarked, neither do they come with captions. While I was reluctant to exclude images-based on quality alone, I adopted the view that images which express a wide range of emotions regardless of quality or imperfections, to the consternation of many a purist photographer and editor. This photobook focuses on how interpreting black protestors' political dress practices can change the experience of viewing and ultimately understanding the black body's role in civil in anti-racism protests. The role of feeling within photographic theory and practice is fundamental with regards to the experience of viewing photographs of suffering because it calls on the viewer to assume the role of a secondary witness, or rather a witness who was not present at the moment of incident develops an emotional identification. The visual experience is never purely visual, but rather engages with other senses that enhance how we see. To discuss feeling in relation to the photographic image is to discuss both the tactile, or the textural, and the emotional. In addressing the symbolic value of dress in relation to the black-body-as-protest-body the viewer gets closer to touching or rediscovering a new narrative of the photograph through the poetics of dress vis-à-vis its aestheticization. The book highlights how the aesthetics of resistance are the wearable political signs, badges, worn in almost every public demonstration, act as a visual and material way of asserting collective beliefs through individual bodies and voices. In the case of the Trayvon Martin protests, the political dress is symbolized by participants wearing hoodies, while carry the now infamous skittles, and ice tea complimented with cries of "No Justice No Peace. Protest."

Seeking Justice is a photodocumentary book of the Smiley Culture Protest of April 16th 2011 by award winning photojournalist and author Delroy Constantine-Simms. The 500 timeless Black and white images in Seeking Justice were acquired by following activists and organizers throughout the protest. Seeking Justice reflects the complex and often contentious relationship between the Black community and police through poignant quotes and essays. Seeking Justice is a reflection of the public reaction to the untimely and questionable death of reggae star Smiley Culture, who died in the presence and custody of the London Metropolitan Police in his own home. Seeking Justice is also a contribution to the photographic history of Black British resistance to police oppression and brutality, for future generations to appreciate and learn from. .

  • - A Collection of 100 Afro-Descendant Perspectives Influenced by Historical and Contemporary Life Experiences

This book aims to highlight, how and why people of Afro-descendant living in Latin American and Caribbean, continue to experience greater levels of violent racial discrimination, than their African-American counterparts. Contributing scholars provides a range of perspectives which illuminate and explore the experiences of Afro-descendant people and their responses to institutional racism and state violence. This volume is organized categories by region and countries, followed by a range of established and ground-breaking perspectives regarding the experiences of the Afro-descendant population in Latin America and the Caribbean. This collection brings together a comparative set of scholarly contributions, which theorize how patterns of past and post recognition racism is experienced by Afro-descendent people through the process of race reformulation, which often takes place after neoliberal states claim to recognize indigenous and Afro-descendant peoples and their rights. Moreover, scholars and journalists explore the dynamic interplay between racial politics and hegemonic power in the region, and investigate the fluid intersection of social power, racial politics and their impact on the region''s indigenous and Afro-descendant identity and culture. Experts collectively discuss both pervasive forms of racism and discrimination under neoliberal recognition and governance, reformulation and even reinforcement of racial projects, ''the process by which social, economic and political forces determine the content and importance of racial categories'' - under so-called progressive governments. A selection of writers assert that the overarching sentiment is that racial formation is part of a right-wing backlash by the poor of racially dominant groups that are resistant to the social, legal, political advances of Afro-descendant communities, especially in recently left leaning countries. Perceptive authors highlight the hypocrisy of neoliberal multiculturalism, of left-wing governments who proclaim the existence of legal and political rights, while doing little to enforcing them. Instead, choosing racial and cultural essentialisms and stereotypes to justify the subordination and oppression of Afrodescendant and indigenous people.Conclusively, the scholarly and journalistic and state reaction to the death of George Floyd confirms that Latin America is entering a news stage of racial recalcitrance, which exposes the dangers of post-recognition racism in an era of racist resistance to Black protest and Afro-Descendant protests and progress.

    - A Collection of Essays Influenced By The Political Awakening of Colin Kaepernick

Constantine-Simms''s # Take A Knee: The Political Awakening of Colin Kaepernick latest book is unparalleled, because it allows more than 100 strong and defining academic voices to offer their perspective on Colin Kaepernick''s controversial act of kneeling during the USA national anthem in 2016, an act that has become one of the most iconic black athlete political protests, since the 1968 Mexico Olympics, when African American athletes Tommy Smith and John Carlos stood on the winner''s podium, while displaying the black power salute, during the US national anthem.Colin] Kaepernick''s simple act spread like wildfire throughout U.S. society, becoming the preeminent symbol of resistance to the United States'' persistent racial inequality," said the publisher''s press release. The book cover has the USA flag in the background and a black silhouette image of the former NFL quarterback, on one knee. This no holds barred, 1178 page book # Take A Knee: The Political Awakening of Colin Kaepernick, covers Jim Crow segregation in sport, Black athlete activism, NFL viewer boycotts, white nationalism, The NFL white balling of Colin Kaepernick, the NFL settlement and apology, The Nike Sponsorship controversy, while outlining how Jay-Z and the NFL effectively killed off the protest and Kaepernick''s NFL career. With his act of protest, Colin Kaepernick ignited a national conversation about race and justice in the USA with far-reaching consequences for football, society and for him, personally," said DuVernay. "Colin''s story has much to say about identity, sports and the enduring spirit of protest and resilience. I couldn''t be happier than to tell this story with the team at Netflix." This book concludes by asserting that despite contemporary Black Lives Matter protests and the gains of the Civil Rights era, the long-standing conflict between the African American community and the police, continues to be the reason why Black sports activists like Colin Kaepernick took a stand by taking a knee and will continue to do so for some time to come.
