Numerous keys are available to us to open the deeper meaning that lives within us; the words of the Holy Qur'an are such keys. Camille Adams Helminski offers in this Volume I, a fresh English translation of the first three surahs of the Quran-Surah al-Fatiha, Surah al-Baqarah, and Surah Al-'Imran, which convey the principles of human ethics, encouraging us to turn again and again to realignment with our Source. Occasional transliterations of the original Arabic are also included to remind us of the beauty of the original revelation.Through the heart of Prophet Muhammad, may great peace and blessing be upon him, this intensive communication opened while in retreat he sought to connect more and more deeply with the Source of Being. Through Its guidance, respect for the natural world, for women, for orphans, for every human being, was encouraged. The original Arabic resonances bestow grace through portals of expansive meaning, and even in translation some of the inherent blessing can be known. We offer here a journey with these meanings, that assist us in coming to know the Truth of Compassion and Mercy and in becoming Its true khalifas (representative care-takers of this creation), guardians of the trust of Being, bringing others into that Radiance, sharing love, and the fruition of Love with God's grace. So much needs rebalancing in our world. Yet we are reminded by the Qur'an that always the Infinite Mercy of Forgiveness, the possibility of realignment with our Source, is waiting. And surely, the more we participate in that flow, the more intimacy with the Beloved is granted, and that which is within the Presence of God is the most beautiful [Qur'an, Surah Al-'Imran 3:195]. As Shams of Tabriz, the beloved mentor of the mystic poet Jalaluddin Rumi has said, "the Qur'an is a love-letter." May it continue to be, as it has been for many centuries, of blessed companionship, an opening towards Divine Reality, for all who approach it with an open heart."O our Sustainer, do not let our hearts swerve from the Truth, after You have guided us, and from Your Presence, gift us with compassion. Truly, You are the Giver of Gifts!" [Rabbana, la tuzhigh quloobana ba'ada izh hadaytana wahab lana min ladunka rahmatan innaka anta al-Wahhab.][Qur'an, Surah Al-'Imran 3:8]
German edition of the contemporary classic on presence and mindfulness, Living Presence: The Sufi Path to Mindfulness and the Essential Self.In Sufism, the mystical branch of Islam, presence is the quality that describes a heart-filled state of mindfulness, an experience of being conscious in the present moment. It is only in this present moment, Sufi teachings reveal, that we can connect with the Divine, and the Divine can live through us.Kabir Helminski is one of the world's most recognized teachers of Sufism. Named one of the "500 Most Influential Muslims" in the world by Georgetown University and the Royal Strategic Studies Center, Helminski and his teachings are touchstones for the growth in interest in Sufism, and his books have been translated around the world. In Living Presence, Helminski lays out the basic principles of Sufism, and how these ideas can lead to the experience of presence. In this inspiring work, readers will learn how to cultivate presence in their lives through:¿Lebende Präsenz" veränderte die Einstellung meiner Studierenden völlig. Es eröffnete ihnen die Augen für die innere Dimension, welche mit der äusseren Dimension Schritt halten muss, damit sich die Transformation tief ins Sein einprägt. Das Buch rüstete die Studierenden auch mit mächtigen (obschon manchmal schmerzhaften) Werkzeugen für den Weg hin zu echtem und bewussten Erwachen aus.
The chapters of this book are transcriptions of talks and dialogs from within a private circle of spiritual practitioners. This collection explores subjects such as developing intention, will, awareness, awakening our capacities for love, reducing the domination of ego, honoring the masters, saints, and prophets that have gone before. As the saying goes, "The body is fed through the mouth; the soul is feed through the ear.""Reading these talks, with their smoothly unfolding mix of Sufi stories, Rumi's poetry, illuminating personal experiences, and scriptural reminders, constantly feels like being in the presence of a modern-day Rumi. Those pedagogical elements may be familiar to some, but here they are infused with a palpable universality, accessibility, practical focus, comprehensiveness-and above all, with a constant, assured sense of reality and immediacy-that movingly reflect a lifetime of spiritual experience, commitment, and engagement with fellow journeyers from many different religions, cultures, and pathways of realization." ~Prof. James W. Morris, Boston College, author of The Reflective Heart
Islam once gave birth to a great civilization that respected religious diversity, freedom of conscience, and scientific thought, and Islamic knowledge contributed to the birth of humanism in the Renaissance. Today's world is desperately in need of a spirituality that is free of dogma, based in experiences not beliefs, one that can reconcile the human and spiritual realms. In his new book, renowned spiritual teacher and Sufi shaikh Kabir Helminski gives us a compelling interpretation of spiritual or holistic Islam that will hearten contemporary Muslims looking for a faith suited to our times, and provide non-Muslims with a brilliant introduction to this rich spiritual tradition.
Rumi's son wrote, "After meeting Shams, my father danced all day and sang all night. He had been a scholar -he became a poet. He had been an ascetic-he became drunk with Love." Shams of Tabriz was indeed Rumi's "Sun," the one who set him alight with Divine Love. With the opening of that friendship, a new paradigm appeared and Love flowed out into this world in such abundance that even after almost 800 years the ripples are still widening to encompass the whole of this world . . ."Rumi's Sun offers something unique in classical Sufi literature: an eyewitness record, by Rumi's own disciples, of the actual personal teachings and conversations of Shams-i Tabriz. In this beautifully readable version, we are given a fascinating insight into a unique and unforgettable personality: a boldly iconoclastic figure whose teachings are marked by an intensity of purpose, and whose own spiritual experience is expressed in an unusually open way. The translators have also done a useful service highlighting the many places where Shams' teachings were subsequently adapted and creatively transmuted throughout Rumi's epic Masnavi and other poems."-James Winston Morris, internationally respected scholar of Sufism, Professor, Boston College"Rumi is the most popular poetic voice in America today. But if he is the king of poetry, Shams of Tabriz is the power behind the throne. What Rumi points us to, indicates, refers to, is here-in the words of his intimate friend and . . . infinitely mysterious master. Shams' words shock and stun, amaze with their inspiration . . . When you have found Shams of Tabriz, you know there is nowhere else you need to go."-Peter Kingsley, author of Reality and In the Dark Places of Wisdom"According to a prophetic tradition, 'Love is a fire that, when it befalls the heart, burns away all but the Beloved.' Look into the burning breast of Shams of Tabriz and you will see the Beloved looking back at you."-Pir Zia Inayat-Khan, Spiritual Leader of the Sufi Order International
