"This project examines the Service Employee International Union (SEIU), long considered the best hope of a future for American organized labor. A union that has catered to a diverse body of workers outside the traditional factory-industrial stream--service workers, domestic workers, immigrant workers--the SEIU has developed particular strategies and tactics and built connections between U.S. and non-U.S. workers to create a vibrant source of agency for historically unrepresented or under-represented members of the workforce. This volume aims to provide a multifaceted examination of the SEIU's innovative organizing strategies, its international reach, its place in the wider labor movement, and its potential impact in the midst of the worst economic downtown since the Great Depression. The volume analyzes the recent history of the SEIU from the development of its famous J4J (Justice for Janitors) model, through its gains in the health care sector and its breakaway from the AFl-CIO, to its most recent controversies with the UNITE-HERE merger and its solidarities with migrant communities across the United States and Canada. Contributors consider openings and opportunities the current economic crisis is creating for organized labour and especially the SEIU; how the SEIU is reinventing itself to adapt to workers' needs; what role the SEIU plays in allying with community organizations to enable improvements in citizens' social and living conditions; the extent to which the SEIU is addressing contemporary challenges in a reasonable, productive, and progressive way; and how its diversity marks this union for progressive change for the twenty-first century. Chartered in 1921, the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) is a worldwide organization that represents more than two million workers in occupations from healthcare and government service to custodians and taxi drivers. Women form more than half the membership while people in minority groups make up approximately forty percent"--

"Most people today think of Johann Sebastian Bach and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart as the only Bach and Mozart of classical music. This volume in the Bach Perspectives series offers essays on the lesser-known musical figures who share those illustrious names alongside new research on the legendary composers themselves. Topics include the keyboard transcriptions of J. S. Bach and Johann Gottfried Walther; J. S. Bach and W. A. Mozart's freelance work; the sonatas of C. P. E. Bach and Leopold Mozart; the early musical training given J. C. Bach by his father and half-brother; the surprising musical similarities between J. C. Bach and W. A. Mozart; and the latest documentary research on Mozart's 1789 visit to the Thomasschule in Leipzig. An official publication of the American Bach Society, Bach Perspectives, Volume 14 draws on a variety of approaches and a broad range of subject matter in presenting a new wave of innovative classical musical scholarship"--

"The National Basketball Association reaches a global audience via a multiplatform strategy that leverages its uncanny ability to connect fans to all things NBA. Steven Secular brings readers inside the league's global operations and traces the history of the NBA's approach to sports media from its 1980s embrace of cable through the streaming revolution of the twenty-first century. As fans around the world stream games and other league content, NBA teams incorporate foreign languages and cultures into broadcasts to boost their product's appeal to audiences in Brazil, China, and beyond. Secular's analysis reveals how the NBA continues to transform itself into a wildly successful media producer and distributor more akin to a streaming studio than the sports leagues of old even as its media partners and sponsors erase any notion of sports as a civic good. A timely look at a dynamic media landscape, The Digital NBA shows how the games we love became content first and sport a distant second"--

"Around the world, hundreds of millions of labor migrants endure exploitation, lack of basic rights, and institutionalized discrimination and marginalization. What factors created a system that forces this huge and growing mass of human beings to toil as an institutional and judicial lower caste? In what ways did labor migrants shape their living and working conditions in the past, and what opportunities exist for them today? Global Labor Migration presents new multidisciplinary, transregional perspectives on issues surrounding global labor migration. The essays go beyond disciplinary boundaries, with sociologists, ethnographers, legal scholars, and historians contributing research that extends comparison among and within world regions. Looking at migrant workers from the late nineteenth century to the present day, the contributors illustrate the need for broader perspectives that study labor migration over longer timeframes and from wider geographic areas. The result is a unique, much-needed collection that delves into one of the world's most pressing issues, generates scholarly dialogue, and proposes cutting-edge research agendas and methods"--
