  • - An Introduction to Romantic and Postromantic Poetry
    av Claudia Moscovici
    502

The Painful Poignancy of Desire is an introduction to Romantic and Postromantic poetry. Professor Moscovici''s exegesis places an emphasis on passion, which is more than merely a romantic theme; passion is the Romantic ethos. Students of literature often wonder why writings from centuries ago are given seemingly permanent places in the canon, and are studied extensively in an undergraduate setting. The Painful Poignancy of Desire addresses contemporary students'' desire to know why older works are relevant, and indeed necessary to their lives and study. By presenting aspects of the Romantic and Postromantic movements in poetry, including her own poetry, Professor Moscovici illustrates that these cultural movements are a significant part of history because they illuminate the origins of an individual''s pleasures, sense of beauty, and ultimately, our hope. These movements continue to awaken our emotions, imaginations, sensibilities, and creativity. They offer a wealth of riches in literary and human history.

  • - Double-Edged Swords
    av Judith A. Schaeffer
    757,-

This work explores the psychoanalytic constructs of transference and countertransference and explains how structures and activities in the human brain account for them. It identifies major transferential and countertransferential themes and ways in which displaced material is most likely to manifest. Written in non-analytic language for non-analysts, this work outlines a five-step approach to allow displaced material to reveal its basic meaning. It provides clinicians with several management strategies, including formulating and using interpretations in a way that does not threaten clients. The focus is on transference and countertransference as they relate to major phases of non-analytic therapy. Through this approach, the book useful provides templates for identifying transference and countertransference phenomena and guidelines for interpreting them to clients. By summarizing key research findings, it will allow readers from various theoretical orientations to make their own judgments about how to deal with the potentially harmful and potentially beneficial phenomena of transference and countertransference.

  • - Secular Authors and Biblical Perspectives

    841,-

From Around the Globe features twenty-six essays from international scholars across various disciplines who explore a broad range of contemporary and cutting-edge connections between the Bible and global literature. The scholars'' fields of study range from classical western literature to multicultural tracts, including a broad variety of literary genres. The scholars use their treatments of literature, criticism, and the Bible to analyze connections among them from a global perspective. Many writers from industrialized nations and the developing world have employed the Bible as an analogue, or have drawn allusions from it to compose their prose, poetry, drama, and other documents. Most often, these authors draw clear references to biblical matter. Other authors are more guarded and camouflaged. Some non-western writers might even be unaware of the allusions they generate, and western writers, while delving into allegorical shadows, may unwittingly layer in biblical references to their works. This collection engages in a reassessment of authors'' biblical references, intentional or unintentional.

  • - Women's Stories of Abuse and Survival

    686,-

These Are Our Stories is a collection of women''s stories, thoughts, and poems about the domestic abuse they have experienced throughout their lives. The second resource is a brief bibliography of literature and resources for domestic violence victims that can be used throughout the U.S.

  • - Abraham, Isaac, and the Rhetoric of Sacrifice
    av Larry Powell
    545,-

This volume examines one of the most controversial stories in the BibleΓÇöthe akedah, or sacrifice of Isaac recounted in the 22nd chapter of Genesis. Today, more than three thousand years later, the story continues to evoke controversy. It has had an impact on Judaism, Christianity and IslamΓÇöeach clinging to different interpretations. Even among adherents of a common faith, interpretations of the passage differ to such extremes that it can be used to justify unthinkable behavior ranging from infanticide, mass murder, and suicide bombings. Abraham''s actions have generated a sacrificial rhetoric that continues to exert a powerful influence on modern society. The rhetoric of sacrifice was born when the first person used the story of akedah to inspire another to sacrifice willingly on their behalf. Since then, a multitude of religious leaders and religious imposters have used the rhetoric of sacrifice to do their bidding. The akedah has proven itself as a tool that placed in the wrong hands can be used to commit unthinkable acts.

This work features an in-depth quantitative and qualitative set of studies on family issues in early adulthood among young adults born in Sweden of Swedish, Polish, and Turkish origins. The results are analyzed to explore the educational attainment of Swedish young adults of different origins, their transitions to marriage and cohabitation, inter-ethnic partnering, and the balance between work and family. The quantitative analyses are further enhanced by anthropologists'' examinations of transitions to adulthood by young men and women. These analyses add depth to the survey findings, and are the basis for creating a new understanding of the diversity among these communities in Sweden. • - Unilateral Transfers and the Transformation of Objectivist Ethics
    av Kathleen Touchstone
    870

Working from this statement, Then Athena Said examines Objectivism, a philosophy founded by Ayn Rand, and ultimately concludes, in opposition to essential claims of Objectivism, that other people are a fundamental part of reality. In making this claim, Then Athena Said reconsiders Objectivism''s central social tenet, the Trader Principle, which dictates the bilateral exchange of value for value between independent equals; elevates "reproductivity" to be on par with productivity, Objectivism''s central virtue; and derives a "heuristic" for charitable giving. Relying, in part, upon economic theory, decision theory under uncertainty, and game theory, Then Athena Said examines unilateral transfersΓÇöincluding charity, childrearing, bequests, retribution, gifts, favors, forgiveness, and various infringements against persons or propertyΓÇöwithin the Objectivist framework.

More often than not, the distribution of socioeconomic resources and political power in Ethiopia has been perceived in favor of the Amhara ethnic group. As a result, efforts to help the minority ethnic groups were supported by the invocation of subjective cultural attributes and sometimes, the manufacture of common historical experiences. After the collapse of the military regime, the present regime''s misguided and divisive strategies sought to rectify what it believed to be a historically distorted distribution of resources and power in Ethiopia. This strategy led to the division of the country into "ethnic Bantustans" and hindered any real move towards development, democracy, and conflict resolution in Ethiopia. In this new work, author Kasahun Woldemariam argues that the Amhara were as excluded economically and politically as any other ethnic group in Ethiopia, and that the concept of Amhara domination is a myth. Working from an interdisciplinary theoretical and methodological approach, this book includes over twenty figures and tables on the regional distribution of revenue and expenditure, health and education, manufacturing industries, and parliamentary elections. It is an important resource for scholars and students of African politics and ethnic conflict analysis and resolution as well as policymakers worldwide and Ethiopians in Ethiopia and the Diaspora.

Judaism''s two native categories, narrative theology and law (also known as parable and praxis or Aggadah and Halakhah) form two distinct modes of discourse. The one expounds norms of attitude and belief, the other, norms of action and behavior. Each possesses its own modes of thought, topical program, and medium for expression. Joined together, they create a remarkably coherent statement. Any understanding of Rabbinic Judaism depends on a theory of how these two modes of thought and expression relate to form a single cogent system. In Praxis and Parable, author Jacob Neusner explores how that single topic "the morality and law of the animal kingdom" in the Rabbinic canon of the formative age, like all other ubiquitous topics encompassed in that canon, produces two distinct vocabularies of analysis. These distinct realms of thought and speech on the same subject yield two separate classifications of the order of nature and society. How these two mediums of expressions intersect and diverge in a single case permits the general characterization of the two Judaic modes of discourse. The general characterization of the interplay of Halakhah and Aggadah defines the interior dynamics of Rabbinic Judaism and forms the principal task of systemic analysis of that Judaism. In the Rabbinic manner, this book works from the case to the rule.

  • - Or the Light of Common Day
    av Bruce E. Fleming
    742

In his new work, Disappointment, Bruce Fleming starts from the realization that even objective views of the world are so only under specific circumstances. Subjects range from war and the nature of explanation systems such as science and astrology to a concept Fleming calls "coloring." When we identify coloring, it seems to us that a single quality of something larger has eclipsed all its other qualitiesΓÇöfor example, skin color or sexual orientation coming to stand for the whole much more complex individual. Once identified, coloring can be questioned and rejected. However, to eliminate coloring, we must already have identified it as such. Before we perceive coloring, we think we''ve given an objective description of the world: today''s coloring was yesterday''s objective. But this in turn suggests that today''s objective may be tomorrow''s coloring. Realizing this is what leads to the technical notion of disappointment examined in this text, a feeling that life is a process of constant revision, not a final state. Through the consideration of literature, artistic, and philosophical works, Fleming explores the impact of disappointment on our view of the world. Beginning with the imagery of Wordsworth who lamented the "glory in the flower" of our youth fading "into the light of common day," and the iconography of the death mask of King Tut, Disappointment suggests that the world both is what it claims to be, and yet is not.
