This book describes the main industrial types of economic mineral deposits, the signs and indicators for recognizing them, and the criteria for evaluating them. The work of prospecting and the methods used in searching for deposits, and in exploring them, are treated at length. Methods of estimating and evaluating the ore reserves and economic value of deposits are discussed with practical advice; and the geological service of operational mines is described. Professor Kreiter's work is a textbook for students of the geological faculties of universities and mining colleges, specializing in the geology and exploration of mineral deposits. The author of this textbook, the late Prof. Vladimir Kreiter, was a distinguished and honored scientist, who at the time of his death held the chair of mineral deposits and exploration at the Patrice Lumumba Friendship University in Moscow. In addition to his teaching work, Prof. Kreiter carried on extensive research, his main work being devoted to the study of mineral deposits, the prospecting for and exploration of minerals and the structure of ore fields and deposits. Prof. Kreiter was the author of more than 100 published works, many of them well known abroad as well as in the USSR. In addition to the present volume, they included The Structure of Ore Fields and Deposits, Semi-metallic Deposits of Central Asia, and The Behavior of Gold in the Oxidation Zone of Pyrite Deposits. Autobiographical reminiscences of Horace Greeley which form a record of the inner life and inspiration of one who actively shared in the many strange intellectual and political phases through which America went during years of intense vitality. Horace Greeley himself gives the best indication of their nature: "I shall never write anything else into which I shall put so much of myself, my experiences, notions, convictions, and modes of thought, as these Recollections. I give, with small reserve, my mental history."
Herbert Spencer (1820-1903) was an English philosopher, best known for his scientific writings. Together with Charles Darwin and Thomas Huxley he was responsible for the acceptance of the theory of evolution. His well-known essay on Education: Intellectual, Moral and Physical was considered one of the most useful and profound books written on education. He projected a vast 10-volume work, Synthetic Philosophy, in which all phenomena are interpreted according to the principle of evolutionary progress. Together with Charles Darwin and Thomas Huxley he was responsible for the acceptance of the theory of evolution. Although no longer influential in biology, his extension of his theory of evolution to psychology and sociology remains important. His "Social Darwinism" was particularly influential on early evolutionary economists such as Thorstein Veblen. As subeditor of the Economist (1843-53), Spencer was an influential exponent of laissez-faire. His early book Social Statics (1851) was strongly tinged with an individualistic outlook.

A biography of Noah Webster, the man who compiled Webster's Dictionary, one of the great dictionaries of all time. At the time of original publication in 1883, Harper's Monthly said this book "...is so spirited and enthralling ... and its pictures so teem with the bustle, the movement, and the activities of the real life of a bygone but most interesting age, that the reader lays down the book with a sigh of regret for its brevity." Horace Elisha Scudder (1838-1902) was a prominent man of letters, and for eight years he was editor of the Atlantic Monthly. Mr. Scudder was the leading advocate of introducing literature into the schools at a time when such advocacy was uphill work, and he edited a great number of literary classics for school use. He wrote a number of historical and biographical works of value.

The first edition of this book appeared in 1870 and was established immediately as one of the classical works on comparative mythology. It received appreciation and criticism in equal measures due to the very controversial nature of the conclusions drawn that were labeled as "momentous." However great scholars like Grimm, Max Muller, Breal, Kuhn, Preller, Welcker, H.H. Wilson, Cornewall Lewis, Grote and Thirlwall fully supported all the important findings of this work which came to be recognized as a masterpiece on Aryan mythology. The author argues that the common stock of philosophical material, which supplements the evidence of language for the ultimate affinity of all the Aryan nations, has been molded into an infinite variety of shapes by the writers of Greek and Latin, of Persian and Englishmen, of the ancient and modern Hindus, of Germans and Norwegians, Icelanders, Danes, Frenchmen and Spaniards. On this common foundation the epic poets of these scattered and long-separated children of one primitive family have raised their magnificent fabrics. From this common source they have derived even the most subtle distinctions of feature and character for their portraits of the actors in the great drama which in some one or more of its many scenes is the theme of all Aryan national poetry. "The purpose of this work is to exhibit clearly and with sufficient fullness the general characteristics of Aryan mythology, as a system which has grown up from words and phrases denoting not one or two objects only, as the sun or moon, but all the phenomena of the sensible world, as they impressed themselves on the minds of primitive men."
