  • - Optimistic Studies
    av Elie Metchnikoff
    462,-

Professor Metchnikoff expounds his main thesis that human life is not only unnaturally short but unnaturally burdened with physical and mental disabilities. He analyzes the causes of these disharmonies and explains his reasons for hoping that they may be counteracted by a rational hygiene. Elie Metchnikoff (1845-1916) was Sub-Director of the Pasteur Institute, and a Nobel Prize winner for medicine. Metchnikoff was born in Russia and lived in Paris from 1888, where many of his works were originally published in French. He worked in the fields of embryology, comparative anatomy, pathology, bacteriology and immunology.

  • - Monasteries and Abbeys and Sacred Sites of France
    av Professor Elizabeth Robins Pennell
    355

Discusses the architecture, restoration and history of the cathedrals of France with 183 pictures by Joseph Pennell. Floor plans and diagrams of the cathedrals are included. Joseph Pennell was born in 1857 and died in 1926. He began his work as an illustrator by selling drawings of south Philadelphia to Scribner's Monthly in 1881. In addition to his extensive sketches of American cities, he went to the Panama Canal and sketched a number of construction sites. He taught etching at the Arts Students' league in New York, wrote several books, served as an art critic on the Brooklyn Eagle, and helped run the New Society of Sculptors, Painters & Engravers. Pennell is considered to have done more than any other one artist of his time to improve the quality of illustration both in the United States and abroad and to raise its status as an art. He produced more than 900 etched and mezzotint plates, some 621 lithographs, and innumerable drawings and water colors.

The First Gas Regiment was established as the result of an order of the War Department in 1917, requiring that each army have a gas and flame service, and requiring as part of it an offensive Gas Regiment. The Boston Transcript reported: "Like the celebrated Camouflage Battalion, it is being organized on the cable request of Lieutenant-General John J. Pershing for a body of men to do pioneer work in the front-line trenches in Flanders. The Germans violated all the laws of war and humanity with their introduction of searing flames and poison gases into the trenches of the Allies, and now American genius and patriotism are relied upon to beat the Hun at his own game."

  • - A History of Monetary Crimes
    av Alexander Del Mar
    288,-

"The insidious crime of secretly or surreptitiously altering the monetary laws of a state - than which no more dastardly or fatal blow can be dealt at its liberties - is not a new one. There is a suggestion in the decree of B.C. 360, concerning the ancient iron money of Sparta, that Gylipus was not unfamiliar with this grave offence. In a later age, Pliny, who justly calls it 'a crime against mankind,' evidently refers to that alteration of the Roman mint code by which what remained of the nummulary system of the Republic was subverted, about B.C. 200, in favor of the authorised private coinages of the gentes." Despite its title, referring to a mistress of Charles II of England, this 1899 work mainly deals with America.Contents:The Crime of 1666SilverThe Coining Mill and PressThe East India CompanyBarbara VilliersThe Cattle and Coinage BillSurrender of the Coinage PrerogativeBribery and CorruptionThe Crime of 1742The Crime of 1868The Crime of 1870The Crime of 1873Equitable Money At the time of original publication in 1899, Alexander Del Mar, M.E., was formerly Director of the Bureau of Statistics of the United States; Mining Commissioner to the United States Monetary Commission of 1976; and the author of a number of books, including: A History of Precious Metals, and The Science of Money.

It is expected that this Dictionary will have a wide and varied audience; thus, while many technical terms do not lend themselves to simple definitions, a deliberate effort has been made to couch the definitions in language understandable to the novice and interested nonprofessional without at the same time doing violence to the sensibilities of the professional.

  • av Johann Heinrich Pestalozzi
    186

This is a reprint of the 1898 Heath edition, abridged from the original very long work, and translated by Eva Channing. First published in German in several volumes between 1781 and 1787, Leonard and Gertrude was a literary success as the first realistic representation of rural life in that language. It describes how an ideal woman exposes corrupt practices and, by her well-ordered home life, sets a model for the village school and the larger community. "The important role of the mother in early education is a recurrent theme in Pestalozzi's writings. Leonard and Gertrude occupies a somewhat peculiar position in literature, since it is neither precisely a story nor a pedagogical treatise, " wrote translator Eva Channing in her introduction. "The village of Bonnal is intended to typify the world, and in describing it, the author expresses his views on some of the greatest social and political questions of all ages. "

  • - The United States Army Chaplaincy 1920 - 1945
    av Robert L Gushwa
    213

This volume is one of a series of five prepared by various authors, designed to be useful and instructive regarding the long history of the United States Army Chaplaincy. The emphasis throughout is on how chaplains did their ministry in the contexts of both war and peace. The series seeks to present as full and as balanced an account as limitations of space and research time permit. The bibliography in each volume offers opportunities for further research. This volume covers the period from 1920 to 1945. Chaplain Robert L. Gushwa, a Regular Army chaplain of the United Presbyterian Church in the U.S.A., is the writer of this volume. Chaplain Gushwa was born and educated in Indiana. He served as pastor of civilian congregations in Kentucky, Florida, and Ohio, before entry on active duty in 1964. He has served at Fort Eustis, Virginia; Fort Bragg, North Carolina; Fort Benning, Georgia; Fort Wadsworth, New York; and overseas in Germany and Vietnam. He has been awarded the Bronze Star with V device and Oak Leaf Cluster, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Army Commendation Medal with second Oak Leaf Cluster, and the Master Parachutist Badge.

  • - From Augustus to Charlemagne
    av William Edward Hartpole-Lecky
    355

  • - A Study in Civil-Military Relations
    av Jeffrey Simon
    392

This textbook presents in a unified manner the fundamentals of both continuous and discrete versions of the Fourier and Laplace transforms. These transforms play an important role in the analysis of all kinds of physical phenomena. As a link between the various applications of these transforms the authors use the theory of signals and systems, as well as the theory of ordinary and partial differential equations. The book is divided into four major parts: periodic functions and Fourier series, non-periodic functions and the Fourier integral, switched-on signals and the Laplace transform, and finally the discrete versions of these transforms, in particular the Discrete Fourier Transform together with its fast implementation, and the z-transform. This textbook is designed for self-study. It includes many worked examples, together with more than 120 exercises, and will be of great value to undergraduates and graduate students in applied mathematics, electrical engineering, physics and computer science.

  • av Ivan Stepanovich Konev
    355

In this first-hand account of the great finishing strokes with which the Soviet Army ended the war against Hitler Germany, Marshal Konev, who was then in command of the 1st Ukrainian Front, analyses the strategic and operational situation of those days. His story includes authentic pen portraits of many prominent commanders such as Marshal of Armoured Forces P. S. Rybalko, and Generals D. N. Gusev and N. P. Pukhov, and his reflections on the nature of modern warfare, the art of moving large masses and equipment, and the morale of the Soviet soldier. Marshal Konev's book covers only a little over a hundred days. But what days they were! Six mighty rivers of Eastern Europe forced, the great industrial region of Silesia overcome. In the operations to free Krakow, Prague, Dresden and Berlin itself from Nazi rule thousands of Soviet soldiers won distinction on the field of battle, thousands died.... Here is the story, told by a man who saw it all with his own eyes, a general who knew every detail of every operation because it was his duty to carry them out. Half the book is devoted to the most authentic account yet written of the Berlin operation, which Konev himself describes as more complex than any he had ever undertaken. Many of the incidents described illustrate the humanity of the fighting men and their commanders. The beautiful and ancient city of Krakow saved from destruction, the care taken of the pictures of the Dresden Gallery discovered in a disused quarry, the skillful manoeuvre that recovered the industries of Silesia intact for Poland and her people. The concluding chapter tells of the swift thrust that liberated Czechoslovakia, where Germany's Field Marshal Schorrier had over a million men under arms.

  • - A Full Refutation of His Slanderous Allegations in Relation to the Character of the Principal Witness Against Him
    av Daniel Clark
    186

Daniel Clark, born in Ireland and a schoolboy at Eton, came to New Orleans in 1786, to join his uncle of the same name. He was prominent in the city, became an American citizen, and in 1806, was elected a delegate to Congress. Shortly afterward he broke with Wilkinson, with whom he had been intimate, and in this book gives much evidence of the General's treachery. Clark strives to prove that Wilkinson was a pensioner of Spain from 1794 to 1803; and an accomplice of Aaron Burr in treasonably plotting a separation of the states. The case is clearly and forcibly put and is a strong one, with information about Jefferson's administration of the West, and the causes there working towards a secession in the early years of the Republic.
