  • - Or How My Business Career Got Sucked into the Black Hole of the Radical Change in the Computer Industry
    av Michael Stockdell
    167

EVENT HORIZON tells the story of the decline of IBM as the dominant force in the computer industry and how my business career was sucked down with it. IBM's decline was caused by two factors: (1) its obsolete technology based on an "all roads lead to Rome" centralized processing, and (2) the changing computer industry culture where technicians rather than salesmen ruled the roost. I saw this as an opportunity to create a unique kind of consulting practice based on technical specialists who could more quickly replace the mainframe legacy systems than generalist consultants. These insights deeply frightened industry management and eventually led to my being driven out of the industry.

Cassandra is only five years old when her mother and sister disappear into the night, leaving her alone with an abusive father. She awaits for their return as days turn into weeks, then months, then years. Driven by loneliness and wanting answers, Cassandra grabs at every lifeline trying to make sense of her life on the edge of a little town where everyone seems to know more about her family than she does. Ignoring her father's advice to keep a low profile and his words, "Better to remain silent and thought a fool than to speak out and remove all doubt," Cassandra visits the only two buildings in her rural neighborhood. The tumbledown shack across the road and a little country church beyond the brambles and bushes start to provide clues. Cassandra's mistakes and do-overs and inner growth and development form the backbone of Do Not Be Deceived. Clinging fiercely to the God she barely knows, she weathers the storms of adolescence and struggles to sort out the good influences from the bad. As she enters adulthood, she begins to realize that her shame because of abandonment and abuse can be turned into something good for God.

  • - A Latino's Lonely Journey To Success
    av Noe Lara
    148,-

The book is a very candid and personal account of a Latino's journey out of poverty. In the book the author shares wonderful stories of his growing -up days as well as stories of his clients after he began his career as a human service worker. He joyously shares his family with the reader and vividly describes the people that had an influence on his life. The book includes pictures as well as poems which contribute greatly to our understanding of the author's thoughts and feelings. He begins by explaining the title to the book. Cuantas Piscas?, he tells us, was a line that young men used to start a conversation with girls picking cotton in the same field. The words have a double meaning to him as they also express how much one is capable of accomplishing, or what is one's potential? It begs the character question, what kind of a person are you? Born to Mexican immigrant parents, the author describes the obstacles that he faced as he chased the illusive American Dream and as he attempted to assimilate into a culture that was not yet ready to welcome him. He describes his academic as well as his spiritual journey and the challenges that he faced as he tried to make sense of a world full of contradictions and confusion. Because of this, Noé Lara shares with us that he gained a better appreciation for his rich Mexican culture and his family's religious beliefs. This, he explains, had a great deal of influence on the way he pursued success.

  • - The Beginning
    av MICHAEL BRANSON
    199

The purpose of this book is to offer a logical, common sense translation of the book of Genesis. It is not written as a dogmatic statement of absolute authority, but rather it is meant as a translation that conforms to the literal writing of Genesis. I am aware that it differs widely from conventional teachings. When I first read the book of Genesis, however, I did not have the benefit of much formal religious training, so I was not influenced by the opinions and interpretations of others. From the outset I formed the theories that are stated here based on the words I read, and further study has only served to strengthen those concepts. This is what the book of Genesis says to me. I offer it as a possible alternative to the interpretations that have been handed down unquestioned and unchallenged for several hundred years. What this book is not is a work of apologetics. I have begun with the assumption that the Bible says what it means, and means what it says.
