The New Jersey Nets were mired in mediocrity when an international man of mystery emerged from the shadows. Russian multibillionaire Mikhail Prokhorov came bearing two gifts: a bottomless wallet and a passion for basketball. In return for his money, he expected everybody associated with the team -- management, players, ball boys -- to commit to success . . . and achieve it within five years. But the Nets required more than money to change their fortunes. They needed shrewd decision makers, brilliant minds, and the most physically gifted players in the world. Instead, as Prokhorov's thirst for instant gratification spiraled out of control, management turned losing into an art form, dangling perfectly good players as trade bait, kowtowing to their stars, and alienating an entire state. The fallout on the court and in the locker room produced, if not a winning team, the most interesting basketball story not yet told.
Tremors in the Cloister is a heartwarming, true story of a friendship between Allan, a young monk, and Father Julian, a Catholic priest struggling to maintain his quality of life despite the ravages of Parkinson's disease. Julian -- also a college professor and monk -- is a devoted naturalist involved in many outdoor projects. By happenstance, Allan becomes Julian's chauffer and assistant. The two men soon bond over their love of nature through making elderberry wine, tracking the illusive sheepshead mushroom, and secretly growing marijuana used to alleviate symptoms of Julian's illness. Julian quickly becomes a mentor for Allan and teaches him not only about the natural world, but also how to become a more spiritual person and appreciate what matters in life. As Julian's health declines, he is forced to make important decisions regarding surgical operations while Allan has his own crisis regarding making a lifelong commitment to the monastic vocation.Tremors offers a real-life account into the nature of Parkinson's disease, the difficulties it creates, and ways of coping with the illness. It also elaborates on some of the significant changes that have occurred in the Roman Catholic Church over the past fifty years. Spiegler's perspective gives the reader a closeup view of monastic life, a view generally shielded from the public. Enlightening and poignant, this memoir of a young man's spiritual journey and meaningful friendship combines moments of humor and sadness, giving readers an unforgettable experience.

Then, using his own personal journey through trauma, lessons learned from leading experts across the country, and poignant real-life anecdotes from survivors, he provides the big strategies and small, practical steps that every parent, grandparent, mentor, caring community member, and policymaker can take to make a difference in the lives of their own children and the hurting children of America.
Self-help gurus often claim to have discovered the formula for a successful life. Just follow steps A, B, and C, they assure you, and happiness will be yours. The problem is, success and happiness mean different things to different people, and following someone else's path won't necessarily get you where you want to be. Reflect Yourself: Exploring, Assessing, Understanding, and Improving Your Life takes a different approach. Rather than providing a road map to a predetermined destination, Michael P. McNally gives you the tools you need to chart the terrain of your own psyche. Once you understand who you are, it becomes possible to look beyond your day-to-day routine -- and identify what you need to do to give your life meaning.

For four years, a radical cult conducted a campaign of harassment and intimidation against the residents of Cochise County, Arizona. When everything came to a head at the tragic shootout at Miracle Valley, religious groups, politicians, civil rights advocates, and many in the media reacted with outrage -- a hysteria based on their own bigotry, ignorance, and self-interest.The Search for Justice chronicles the events that led to the shootout and the tumultuous events that occurred afterward. It tells of a search for justice by the Cochise County citizens and sheriff deputies against the powerful special interests that still shape state and national politics. The aftermath of the shootout provides Arizona and the country with vital lessons about the law, prejudice, and demagoguery.
We are having the wrong conversations about improving public education in America. Some say teachers unions are the main problem, and if we just get rid of them and create more choice and competition, the market will take care of itself. Another view is that corporate reformers are trying to privatize education and profiteer from America's second largest industry. If we would just feed the system with more taxpayer money, and add universal preschool, the system would perform just fine.Neither approach is likely to meet with broad, sustained success. If America is going to fulfill its economic potential and rebuild its middle class, a high performing public education system is foundational. If you look past the superficial debate, there is more common ground (and reason for hope) than you might think. And in places you might have overlooked.Randy Barth offers a unique perspective. A former stockbroker and corporate CEO, he founded a nonprofit organization called THINK Together. In little more than a decade, it has grown into the top half of one percent of all nonprofit organizations in America. A fusion of business people and educators, THINK Together works in partnership with more than 450 traditional public schools serving low-income kids. The outsider-insider perspective Randy's gained along the way, supported by data that shows what's working, needs to be heard if we are serious about looking for systemic solutions. This is a book for everybody. It describes Randy and his colleagues' personal and spiritual journey to the frontiers of hope. If you are a citizen, taxpayer, parent or grandparent, community volunteer, mentor, philanthropist, school board member, teacher, administrator, a classified school employee, a policy maker or influencer, or a person of faith; this book is a must-read as together we look for solutions that will make our schools, and our country, great again. It all starts with you!
Jesus made many bold claims about himself throughout scripture. The boldest being that he is the Son of God. This primary claim alienates many around the world. Other religions say that Jesus was a great philosopher, teacher, humanitarian, and perhaps even one of the world's greatest prophets. All stop short of the claim that Jesus is the Son of God.Jesus claimed to be the "Way, the Truth, and the Life." He stated that he was the "Door" to his Father in Heaven. He also mentioned that he was the "Bread that came down from Heaven." In another section of scripture he touts being the "Alpha and the Omega" and the "Beginning and the End." He introduces himself as being eternal in the Gospel of John while claiming to be the co-creator of all things. He continues by describing himself as the "Light" that was called upon in the beginning of the book of Genesis when God said "Let there be light."Of the many claims that Jesus made, one stands out as being the most obscure but intriguing characteristics in scripture. Jesus called himself a "worm." How can a man who claims to be equal with God also make himself equivalent to a worm? If this is true, what does it mean for all of those who believe in him? What does it mean for all of those who do not?Jesus Is a Worm meticulously analyzes and contextualizes this overlooked metaphor in the Bible and explains how the symbolic power of a particular worm--the tola worm--holds significant lessons for all who would dare to listen. From its entomological roots to its status in Biblical societies, the tola worm was a recognizable and essential allegory in ancient times. Over the centuries, however, its importance in the Bible's teachings waned. Without Kendall Shoulder's passion for the truth, it may have disappeared entirely.Standing at the foot of Mount Herman at the altar of Zeus, Jesus asked a rather profound question of his disciples. He wanted to know from their perspective how they defined him. Before that time, there had been many angel-like gods that were purported to be God, and were presented in dramatic and powerfully deceptive ways. After reading Jesus Is a Worm, the same question will be asked of you. Who do you say he is?

Borderland immigration and drug trafficking are heated issues for most people living in the Southwest. But for Arizona rancher-author Richard Collins, who operates a 13,000 acre ranch near the Mexican border, they are a daily occurrence. "Freese says that 'memory must metabolize [the Holocaust] endlessly,' and his book certainly turns hell into harsh nourishment: keeps us alert, sharpens our nerves and outrage, forbids complacent sleep so the historical horror can't be glossed over as mere nightmare. The Holocaust wasn't a dream or even a madness. It was a lucid, non-anomalous act that is ever-present in rational Man. In the face of this fact Freese never pulls punches. Rather, his deft, brutal, and insightful words punch and punch until dreams' respite are no longer an option and insanity isn't an excuse."-David Herrle, Author of Sharon Tate and the Daughters of Joy"... Freese's haunting lament might best be explained (at least to me) by something Nathaniel Hawthorne wrote about Herman Melville's endless search for answers to questions that perplexed him all his adult life. Melville was incessantly obsessed with what one might call the why of it all-life, death, metaphysical mysteries. Similar to Freese, Melville was repeatedly afflicted with a dark and depressive state of mind."-Duff Brenna, Professor Emeritus CSU San MarcosMathias B. Freese is a writer, teacher, and psychotherapist. His recent collection of essays, This Möbius Strip of Ifs, was the winner of the National Indie Excellence Book Award of 2012 in general nonfiction and a 2012 Global Ebook Award finalist. His I Truly Lament: Working Through the Holocaust was one of three finalists chosen in the 2012 Leapfrog Press Fiction Contest out of 424 submissions.
A year before she was to retire, Dr. Ann Angell volunteered to start a new class at the Montessori public school where she'd been teaching for a decade. Her mission was to guide and encourage her students -- second, third, and fourth graders with a wide variety of strengths and weaknesses -- as they pursued their own paths of self-directed learning. How would she inspire Maya, obsessed with multiplication tables, to get excited about fractions and decimals? How would she help Blake become interested in something other than reading, and was that even a good idea? How could she persuade Hayden, a gifted artist, to interact more peacefully with his classmates? The Colorado Student Assessment Program, which originated from No Child Left Behind legislation, presented further challenges. Ann would have to prepare her students for standardized testing while at the same time nurturing a mind-set that doesn't assume there's only one way to absorb information, only one correct answer to every question. The Romance of Teaching: Montessori in the Elementary School chronicles a school year filled with growth and joyful learning. If you've ever wondered how education can be effective when kids are free to explore whatever subjects they choose, you'll find Ann's account enchanting.
