The dead woman looked strangely like Dolores Kennedy, only child of wealthy parents. But it was Dolores herself who stumbled over the body outside the exclusive Philadelphia girls' school she attended. And Inspector Davis could find nothing but coincidence to tie the two together. It was this striking resemblance that kept Davis hunting odd facts and tracking peculiar clues for more than a year. During those months a man was tried for the murder and acquitted. Dolores sank into a deep lethargy, and her interest in life was aroused only by the appearance next door of a very elgible bachelor, a man whose suave manners and social compentence were belied by his private behavior. Dolores started by being curious about her neighbor, and ended up deeply attracted to him. Their unusual relationship, plus the sudden appearance of an old flame of Dolores's, brought this strange case to an unexpected climax -- which Inspector Davis resolved almost by remote control!

  • - Essays and Reviews
    av Darrell Schweitzer
    202,-

Darrell Schweitzer's third collection of essays and reviews, a successor to the well-received "Windows of the Imagination" and "The Fantastic Horizon," is a balanced mixture of scholarship and entertainment, ranging over the entire spectrum of imaginative literature, from the oldest novel in the world (1st century B.C.) to classic (and not-so-classic) pulp fiction, to childhood reading, to examinations of the works of such masters as H.P. Lovecraft, M.R. James, Robert Bloch, Stanley Weinbaum, John W. Campbell, and Thomas M. Disch. In between we encounter such surprising topics as a proposal for an H.P. Lovecraft biopic ("The Whole Wide Lovecraft"), the eccentricities of William Beckford (the author of Vathek), and even a report from Blobfest, an annual street fair devoted to the famous 1958 cult film, at which Schweitzer, as a member of the press, was allowed to touch the original Blob. Many of these pieces have been published in the prestigious "The New York Review of Science Fiction.""Schweitzer writes in an informative style that's knowledgeable, witty, and high accessible. This is the finest kind of criticism -- it makes you want to read more, both of the critic's own prose and that of the writers he's discussing. Highly recommended!" -- Robert Reginald. Darrell Schweitzer is a novelist, short-story, writer and critic, a former editor of the legendary "Weird Tales" magazine, and a four-time World Fantasy Award finalist and one-time winner. His previous book of essays, "The Fantastic Horizon," was a finalist for the Mythopoeic Award.

Man's search for wealth has taken him to many out-of-the-way places. What is now Jackson's Hole was a way of life to the Native Americans who summered here and wintered in the lower and warmer regions to the east of Togwotee Pass. A summer in this secluded valley meant plenty of fish and other wildlife for food, skins for clothing and teepees, as well as a cool, well-watered environment.Snowmelt-fed streams bordered by vegetation supported many beaver and other fur-bearers that attracted men of European descent in their never-ending quest for commercial wealth. Mountain men and trappers considered the natural resources of the area as there to be taken for their own personal gain, By 1840 beaver became scarce and fell from fashion. The land that supported bison was thought good for domestic cattle, so ranchers settled in Jackson Hole from one end to the other. Dry years and the Great Depression forced many of them to sell out.Now millions of visitors come each year to recapture the thrill of wandering in a land still much as the Native Americans left it. This is a new wealth that depreciates little under protection as a National Park.An increasing number of people look for ways to identify themselves with those who led the way into this new land. "Campfire Tales of Jackson Hole" give you this opportunity in an easy to read text that takes you back to the people and evens that transpired in the valley.

The "Famous Women of the French Court" series covers notable women -- many of them wives of Napoleon Bonaparte or associated with him -- and their lives before, during, and after Napoleon's reign. This volume concerns Marie-Therese Charlotte of France (1778-1851), Madame Royale, who was the eldest child of Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette (and the only one of their children to reach adulthood; her siblings all died before the age of 20). She married to Louis Antoine, Duke of Angouleme, the eldest son of the future Charles X, Louis XVI's brother. After her marriage, she was known as the Duchess of Angouleme. She became the Dauphine of France upon the accession of her father-in-law to the throne of France in 1824. Technically she was Queen of France for twenty minutes, on 2 August 1830, between the time her father-in-law signed the instrument of abdication and the time her husband, reluctantly, signed the same document.
