Thaddeus of Warsaw by Jane Porter is a historical novel first published in 1803. The novel is set during the late 18th century and tells the story of Thaddeus Sobieski, a Polish nobleman and patriot who becomes a hero during the Polish struggle for independence against Russian oppression. After the fall of Poland, Thaddeus flees to England, where he must navigate a new life in exile, far from his homeland. The novel is notable for its blend of historical events with romantic elements, as Thaddeus's personal bravery and honor are tested in both war and love. It also reflects Porter's deep sympathy for Poland's plight and her admiration for the Polish people. Through Thaddeus's experiences, the novel explores themes of patriotism, sacrifice, and the quest for justice, while also delving into the challenges faced by refugees and exiles.Thaddeus of Warsaw was well-received in its time and contributed to the growing popularity of historical fiction as a genre. The novel's combination of historical narrative and romantic adventure appealed to readers of the early 19th century and remains a significant work in the canon of English literature.

Jake Kilgore was defending the son of the territory's richest and most powerful man. The charge -- MURDER!McCandless crossed the cell."It was bad enough that you brought that girl out there," he cried. "But to give her your mother's ring! The Lucero ring! Harry, why? Why? The Lucero blood goes back for three hundred years in this land. Is this what it comes down to? This cell, the gallows out in the yard? Is this the end of the McCandless line?"He groaned and turned to Kilgore with fierce eyes of hatred. "Stop 'em, Kilgore! Stop 'em or I will! If they touch one hair of my boy's head, I'll kill 'em -- the whole pack! There was blood once in this land. Blood will run again! I swear it on my soul, on my hope for redemption."
