Henry Fielding (1707-1754) an English novelist and dramatist best known for Tom Jones, an example of his earthy humor and satirical writing. Fielding's legal writings include court arguments and proposals for providing for the poor and addressing the increase in robberies, exploring the underlying societal ills.

Mark Twain (Samuel Langhorne Clemens, 1835-1910) famous humorist and novelist traveled the lecture circuit. Unfortunately many of his speeches and lectures were lost or not written down, making collecting his works an ongoing process. Long-unseen material by Twain has been rediscovered as recently as 1995.

Richard Horatio Edgar Wallace (1875-1932) was an English crime writer, journalist, novelist, screenwriter, and playwright, who wrote 175 novels, 24 plays, and numerous articles in newspapers and journals. Wallace is best known for his movie script for King Kong. The Blue Hand features "the cunning solicitor" Septimus Salter.

Pierre-Augustin Caron de Beaumarchais (1732-1799) was a French playwright, watchmaker, inventor, musician, diplomat, fugitive, spy, publisher, arms dealer, satirist, financier, and revolutionary (both French and American). Best known for his Figaro plays including The Barber of Seville and the Marriage of Figaro, whose revolutionary ideas generated considerable controversy both as plays and in their operatic forms, Rossini's "Barber" and Mozart's "Le Nozze de Figaro" being the best known today. Carleton Britton Case (1857-?) was a writer on wit, humor, and entertainment. His books include The Wit and Humor of Abraham Lincoln, Good Stories About Roosevelt [Theodore], and a number of volumes for entertaining small groups in the pre-television age.

Helen Adams Keller (1880-1968) was an American author, political activist, and lecturer. She was the first deaf and blind person to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree. The story of how Keller's teacher, Anne Sullivan (1866-1936), broke through the isolation imposed by a near complete lack of language, allowing the girl to blossom as she learned to communicate, has become widely known through the dramatic depictions of the play and film, The Miracle Worker.

Father Charles Edward Coughlin (1891-1979) was a controversial Roman Catholic priest was one of the first political leaders to use radio to reach a mass audience. Early in his career Coughlin was a vocal supporter of Franklin D. Roosevelt and early New Deal proposals, and was considered a Populist. However, Coughlin began to use his radio program to issue anti-Semitic commentary, and later to support some of the Fascist policies of Adolf Hitler and Benito Mussolini. During the early 1930s, Coughlin attacked communism, socialism, and American capitalists whose greed, he contended, was providing fertile soil for the spread of leftist ideology.

Robert William Service (1874-1958) was a poet and writer, often called "the Bard of the Yukon," is best known for his humorous tales in verse "The Shooting of Dan McGrew" and "The Cremation of Sam McGee," from his first book, Songs of a Sourdough. When World War I broke out, Service tried and failed to enlist, covered the war briefly for the Toronto Star, then worked as a stretcher bearer and ambulance driver with the American Red Cross. While convalescing in Paris, he wrote a new book of mainly war poetry, Rhymes of a Red Cross Man, dedicated to the memory of Service's "brother, Lieutenant Albert Service, Canadian Infantry, Killed in Action, France, August 1916."

William Taylor Adams (1822-1897), pseudonym Oliver Optic, was a noted academic, author, and Massachusetts state legislator. Boat Club is the first in a series of "books for boys." This 1896 version is revised from the pre-Civil War original and includes an introduction by the author.

The Journal of Mississippi History, Vol. 10, No. 3, July 1948, primarily contains an article by Alfred Holt Stone (1870-1955), a lawyer and cotton planter in Mississippi. Stone served as president of the MHS, and authored a history of the 13th, 14th and 15th amendments as well as a collection of articles on race, including A Mississippian's View of civil Rights, States Rights, and the Reconstruction Background. A second major article by Willie D. Halsell is Migration into and Settlement of Leflore County in the Later Periods, 19876-1920.

Samuel Lyman Atwood Marshall (1900-1977) was a chief U.S. Army combat historian during World War II and the Korean War. He authored some 30 books about warfare, including Pork Chop Hill: The American Fighting Man in Action, which was made into a film of the same name. Island Victory is the "story of the combat experiences of certain units of the 7th Infantry Division in the battle for the capture of Kwajalein [the southernmost and largest island in the Marshall Islands]" written from "the words of all men who fought and were not killed or badly wounded in the action."

Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm (1785-1863 and 1786-1859, respectively), known as the Brothers Grimm, were German academics, linguists, cultural researchers, and authors who together collected folklore. Among the most well-known storytellers of European folk tales, the Grimms popularized such stories as Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, The Frog Prince, Hansel and Gretel, Rapunzel, Rumpelstiltskin, Snow White, and Little Red Riding Hood [here called Little Red Cap] -- all of which are inlcuded in Household Stories, along with dozens of others. Also included are the original black & white interior illustrations from the 1886 British edition.

A 1913 Choice Recipes collection from Walter Baker & Company, makers of baking chocolate, includes Chocolate and Cocoa Recipes by Miss Maria Parloa (1843-1909), an American cookery lecturer and author of books on cooking and housekeeping; and Homemade Candy Recipes by Mrs. Janet McKenzie Hill (1852-1933), a prominent early practitioner of culinary reform, food science and scientific cooking.
