Raising her two sons as a single mother in Washington, D.C., author Eliza Richards struggles to find a way to support her family and give her boys the best life she can. But as they mature, both sons-quite separately from each other-become addicts. The eldest enters recovery in Minnesota, and eventually establishes his own highly successful addiction-recovery services. Her younger son-bright, brimming with life and remarkably charismatic-nonetheless falls into addiction, too, but he cannot escape its hold well into middle age. Despite her son's repeated relapses and apparent determination to destroy his life, his mother never gives up on him-although she is often encouraged to do so. He lives on a chaotic, treacherous, and sometimes tragic knife edge until, somehow, he becomes determined to change. Threads of Grace is a prodigal-son story like no other, the tale of a mother's unbreakable bond with an exasperating son whom she loves deeply. It's a story of heartbreak and faith, desperation and, just possibly, redemption. The author is a retired financial advisor in Washington, and this is her first book. It's one that will make you despair, then profoundly remind you that each of us can always choose hope.

After years of drinking and drug abuse, I ended up in the hospital with liver cirrhosis. I spent a month in the psych ward, drying out, hallucinating the entire time. This is a true account of those hallucinations. I hope it will give some insight, and that parts will make you laugh. There's humour in almost everything, right?! 'Pretend no one is singing' is a true life horror story ending with an unexpected, unasked for, miracle, some health advice, and a breakfast recipe. Above all, it is a story about God's grace, because in the end, He saved me. *all names except my own have been changed*

Living on a farm was hard in those days. Many people were going broke and had to forsake farming and go to work in factories in order to make enough money just to give their families the necessities in life ... let alone the frills they wanted. We were the last family in our area to have electricity. However, we were the first in our community to purchase a 1949 Ford sedan that my father proudly drove throughout the neighborhood. Gasoline was about 35 cents a gallon in 1949, which was a lot of money back then, but we drove that car for at least ten years. Step back with me into a simpler but very colorful time where proud, honest folks did their best to survive in a "Life on the Edge of an Era."

  • - The Story of a Black Family that Started off White
    av Geoff Fuller
    266,-

Book Quote: "I was getting ready to go out the door to work when the phone rang. I didn't want to answer it, but something told me to pick up the phone. When I did, the voice on the other end said, 'Hello, Louise, this is Alex Haley.' I was shocked!" -Louise "Bunch" King In 1924, Walter Plecker, Director of Vital Statistics, drafted and lobbied for The Racial Integrity Act, describing it as "the most perfect expression of the white ideal." Plecker directed offices under his authority to change vital statistic records and reclassify thousands of mulattoes (persons with mixed-race ancestry) as black without their consent and without notifying them. The existence of mixed-race people greatly disturbed Plecker, who was convinced that mulatto offspring were slowly contaminating the white race...referring to them as rats that needed to be stopped. Many mixed-race families came under fire from Plecker, who delighted in informing such families that they were not white, only negro (black). Shortly after, in 1930 the United States Census Bureau, under pressure from white southern legislators, discontinued using "the racial classification of mulatto" altogether. As a result, the long social recognition of mixed-race people was lost.[i] Walter Plecker's belief that..."one drop of Black blood makes one Black and only Black" was a lie perpetuated by Plecker and Aryan supremacists in their effort to purify the white race. Sadly, their teaching still resonates across America today. Its residue still covers the minds of Americans, most of whom have never even heard of the one-drop rule. One-drop rule thinking, however, is so ingrained into our culture that people of all ethnicities don't even notice the many ways they perpetuate this belief...But if they pause, and look closely... they will see it.

    - Trauma, Truth, and the Trials of American Democracy
    av Jamie Raskin
    380

In this searing memoir, Congressman Jamie Raskin tells the story of the forty-five days at the start of 2021 that permanently changed his life--and his family's--as he confronted the painful loss of his son to suicide, lived through the violent insurrection in our nation's Capitol, and led the impeachment effort to hold President Trump accountable for inciting the political violence. On December 31, 2020, Tommy Raskin, the only son of Maryland Congressman Jamie Raskin, tragically took his own life after a long struggle with depression. Seven days later on January 6, Congressman Raskin returned to Congress to help certify the 2020 Presidential election results, when violent insurrectionists led by right wing extremist groups stormed the U.S. Capitol hoping to hand four more years of power to President Donald Trump. As our reeling nation mourned the deaths of numerous people and lamented the injuries of more than 140 police officers hurt in the attack, Congressman Raskin, a Constitutional law professor, was called upon to put aside his overwhelming grief--both personal and professional--and lead the impeachment effort against President Trump for inciting the violence. Together this nine-member team of House impeachment managers riveted a nation still in anguish, putting on an unprecedented Senate trial that produced the most bipartisan Presidential impeachment vote in American history. Now for the first time, Congressman Raskin discusses this unimaginable convergence of personal and public trauma, detailing how the painful loss of his son and the power of Tommy's convictions fueled the Congressman's work in the aftermath of modern democracy's darkest day. Going inside Congress on January 6, he recounts the horror of that day, a day that he and other Democrats had spent months preparing for under the correct assumption that they would encounter an attempted electoral coup--not against a President but for one. And yet, on January 6, he faced the one thing he had failed to anticipate: mass political violence designed to block Biden's election. With an inside account of leading the team prosecuting President Trump in the Senate, Congressman Raskin shares never before told stories of just how close we came to losing our democracy that fateful day and lays out the methodical prosecution that convinced Democrats and Republicans alike of Trump's responsibility for inciting insurrectionary violence against our government. Through it all, he reckons with the loss of his brilliant, remarkable son, a Harvard Law student whose values and memory continually inspired the Congressman to confront the dark impulses unleashed by Donald Trump. At turns, a moving story of a father coping with his pain and a revealing examination of holding President Trump accountable for the violence he fomented, this book is a vital reminder of the ongoing struggle for the soul of American democracy and the perseverance that our Constitution demands from us all.

  • - A Journey Through Thailand
    av Carl E Weaver
    147

This is the story of what happens when the author's plans to ordain as a Buddhist monk in Thailand are derailed after he has arrived in the country. Next Life in the Afternoon is spiritual, funny, at times irreverent, and full of personal lessons learned along the way.I'm squatting naked on a concrete floor in the predawn coolness of Udon Thani, pouring water from a washbasin onto my head to rinse off the bar soap I used as shampoo. My hair is long and stringy. I had counted on it being shaved off by now, so I had let it grow out a bit leading up to the trip. It's about fifty-five degrees, and I am trying to be as quiet as possible so as not to wake the monks and my traveling companions. The splish-splosh of water is punctuated by my sharp, pronounced inhaling, a result of being doused with such breathtakingly cool water. My toes tingle against the cold floor, and I am momentarily brought back to Boston, where my trip began. It seems to be a different planet, almost, although the air and water hold a familiar chill.A week into the trip, I still haven't acclimated to everything, and I am stuck somewhere between amazement and culture shock. My mind tries to escape like the cool sudsy water that pools at my feet. The sun is nearly on the horizon, and the temple is coming alive with slow-moving footsteps along the rainy paths outside. I should get going. The morning alms rounds have begun, and I hear familiar voices muffled outside the door. I can't make out many words, but hear one that is familiar: Farang. A half-derogatory Thai word for "foreigner" and the name I have in this country that keeps me at arm's length.-From Next Life in the Afternoon: A Journey Through ThailandWhat's with the name?"Next life in the afternoon" is a translation of the Thai idiom "Chat na bai bai." It's a lightly humorous expression of frustration in plans not working out as intended. This seemed to be an apt title, since the author was not able to become a monk. It also ties in the concepts of reincarnation and impermanence, which are key in Buddhist belief and thus Thai culture.

And for that, I am grateful. This book will open your world view and warm your heart. Truly a must read!" Linda"Reading this book was like taking a really fun ride though all things seen and unseen. Written with truth, humor and unending positivity. I am so thankful to be able to validate the beginning days in Dana's life. It is not the challenges that define who we are or what we are capable of becoming, but how we face these challenges: we can set fire to the ruins or build step by step through them a path that leads us to freedom. "I've found that every challenge I've encountered and every fear I've faced has brought me closer to where I belong." The book offers its readers the motivation and encouragement needed to overcome challenging situations.Throughout our existence, we are placed, practically all the time, in front of new challenges, which we need to overcome.Generally, when we are faced with challenging situations, we tend to fall into suffering, believing that there is no way out or solution, especially when we cannot solve the problems immediately. However, we need to internalize that, as much as we feel anxious to overcome the challenges that arise, they are overcome little by little in our daily lives. When we put in our minds that overcoming the challenging situations in our lives happens daily, we can solve such issues in a lighter way and with less and less suffering. So, if at this moment you are facing any problem or challenge in your life, know that the secret to overcoming is to live one day at a time, trying to understand and welcome your emotions and feelings. By doing this, you will realize that as time goes by, the solution will appear, without you having to despair. Live in the present time, in the here and now, always breathing deeply, and then you will understand that overcoming challenges is a daily process, full of learning for our evolution.

This book covers many of my personal memories and life experiences growing up in Luton's High Town and Tin Town in the 50s/60s/ and 70's. I wish I had listened more and asked more questions. I have tried to keep everything as positive and accurate as I could. - Teresa Barker, Author

I was born into a family of lies and abuse. Nowhere in my early life did I even stand a chance against being raped or beaten by the ones who said they loved me. The ones who said they loved me trashed me and kicked me out like a piece of garbage. They took an innocent body and shred it from the inside out. Rape from my own mother, prostitution by my own mother, and being used for her own gambling needs. This was my mother. Being abandoned at a bus stop at 2 months old, this too was my mother. My stomach was sliced open and left to bleed out, being left for dead, this was my husband. From beatings and rapes to deaths of loved ones, this was my whole life. I never stood a chance as a child and never had a teenager's life. I want you to understand that every word put into this book about me shed tears along the way. This book is incredibly detailed and very graphical. It is not recommended for young viewers. My hope by giving you my life to read is that if you ever find yourself in a situation as any of mine you will know there are others out there who also have gone thru this and that you are never alone. The eighties and nineties did not carry many of the laws that we have today and therefore many children were left to fend for themselves back then. I was one of those children. I was The Unwanted Child.
