The creative seed for Fascinating Folklore began under the popular hashtag #folklorethursday. Each week John Reppion tweeted a different writing prompt on a folkloric theme that PJ Holden would swiftly adapt into a stunning single-panel comic. What began as a creative challenge between two friends rapidly developed; Reppion expanded each of his original prompts into a rich essay corresponding to each of PJ's stunning comics. The range of folkloric topics is genuinely expansive, from Hawthorne, Blackberries, and the Willow tree to the legend of Boudica, the Wandjina spirits of Western Australia, and the Japanese ghost, Okiku!

We must find my friend at all cost. There was more to this than an abduction. Someone searched for the guild members kidnapping or murdering them. What were they searching for? 'In these wise, capacious, achingly beautiful stories, Omer Friedlander maps the hidden geography of the human heart like a young Chekhov' ANTHONY MARRA'A beautiful debut by a deeply humane writer. Every story is a vivid world unto itself, intensely felt, and often revelatory' NICOLE KRAUSSA divorced con-artist and his young daughter sell empty bottles of 'holy' air to credulous tourists. In a bombed-out Beirut radio station, a Lebanese Scheherazade enchants three young soldiers with her nightly tales.Ahead of a school 'Show and Tell', two brothers kidnap a Shoah survivor from a supermarket to pose as their grandfather. An Israeli volunteer at a West Bank checkpoint mourns the death of her son, a soldier killed in Gaza. From the limestone alleyways of Jerusalem to the desolate Negev Desert and the sprawling orange groves of Jaffa, Omer Friedlander's stories are fairy tales turned on their head by the stakes of real life, where moments of fragile intimacy mix with comedy and notes of the absurd.Casting his eye, not on the region's conflicts, but on the hopes and failures of its people, The Man Who Sold Air in the Holy Land is at times darkly funny, at others quietly devastating.
Whether as the mothers of the Norse God Heimdall, Morgan and her sisters on Avalon, the nine sisters at the heart of the founding myth of the Gikuyu of Kenya, or witches battling with the Irish St Patrick, stories of nine women, often attending a goddess or linked to a heroic or divine male, exist across much of our world. Triggered by a local story still told in his native Dundee, Stuart McHardy has traced what seems to be memories of groups of nine women, most likely some kind of priestesses, across much of Europe and as far as Siberia, Korea, India and Africa. Whether as Pictish saints, Muses, Valkyries, Druidesses or witches, the tales of these groups of nine women transcend a vast range of cultural and linguistic boundaries. The painting of nine women dancing round a priapic male in a Catalonian cave painting over fifteen thousand years old suggests these groups may well have been one of the oldest cultural institutions humanity has known.Â
In the beginning, fairy tales were all we had. Tales to explain the unexplained, to impart morality, and culture. But more often than not, to warn. From the editors of the From the Rock anthologies comes a new selection of stories, carefully curated from some of Newfoundland and Labrador's favourite authors. Between these pages, old tales are revisited, familiar foes lurk, and fairy tales for the modern age are born. Including the work of Bronwynn Erskine (By Reservation Only), Melissa Bishop (The Fairies of Foggy Island) and David James Lynch (All Things Broken).

Do you know that there was a "three-legged" seer, named rishi Bhringi? Perhaps you do not know. To make you "know" the "unknown," or "lesser known," is the sine qua non, nay the aim, of the book entitled "Story Time: The Puranic Wisdom." For the stories, myths, legends, tales, included in this volume, have been dug out from the holy scriptures and renowned classics. One of the characteristic beauties of the puranic and the classical literature is the happy amalgamation of nature and imagination. It is common to entertain children with stories in which birds and beasts are made to speak. But the stories of the Puranas and the epics are meant for elderly people. The usual expedient device employed is that these creatures in the previous birth, were human beings. For instance, a deer was a rishi in the previous birth, or a fox a king; the subsequent degradation being due to a curse. Each story teaches us something about life.

As Nephele, Alexus, and their faithful companions grapple with the devastating loss on Mount Ulra, the threat of Thamaos's reign rises in the East. To prepare, the crew must strengthen the Northland and Summerland armies, even if it means depending on the one being they never thought would live again: Neri, God of the White Wolf.Nephele made a deal she can't escape, a deal that not only ensures the Wolf's resurrection, but one that forces her to remain at his side, even when he returns North to bolster defenses and destroy any traitors and enemies remaining on his land. The last thing Nephele wants is to spend her days and nights alone with a seductive, arrogant god, but Tiressia's future depends on Neri being their primary weapon, one only she holds the power to wield. As Thamaos aims his first wave of destruction at Neri, Nephele finds that not only is the Wolf more difficult to control than she believed, but that he's far more human than she gave him credit for. With every passing hour, the undeniable passion between them burns brighter, until their fire becomes impossible to resist, and impossible for Thamaos to ignore.Because the only thing he loathes more than the Wolf roaming Tiressia again, is that there's a witch at his side, and her name is Bloodgood. The Wolf and the Witch is book three in the Witch Walker romantic fantasy series, perfect for fans of Sarah J. Maas, Jennifer L. Armentrout, and Scarlett St. Clair.¿
