Cell Number in Relation to Seed Size in Peanut (Arachis Hypogaea L.)

Om Cell Number in Relation to Seed Size in Peanut (Arachis Hypogaea L.)

Abstract: Little is known regarding physiological processes which regulate seed growth rate and seed size in peanut (Arachis hypogea). As a step toward understanding these processes underlying varietal differences in seed size, the relationship between the number of cells in the seed and seed weight was determined for five peanut cultivars. The final seed size for these cultivars ranged from approximately 270 to 1000 mg and the final cell number from 3.2 to 5.4 million. Seed weight or size was correlated with cell number more than cell size, but smaller seeds had more cells per unit of seed weight. This suggests that physiological processes controlling both cell size and number are operative in determining final seed size among cultivars.
