Published in 1895, this landmark book, copiously illustrated, describes and documents the discoveries of Arthur Evans (1851-1941) during his first visit to Crete in 1894, when he confirmed the existence of an ancient pictographic form of writing that pre-dated the Phoenician alphabet later used by the Greeks.
