In films like Five Easy Pieces, he captured the confused mood of the times, with his leading man Jack Nicholson embodying the dissatisfaction felt by many in the post-sixties cultural landscape. Rafelson, though, was always hard to pin down to a style, and his filmography is full of such unique gems as The King of Marvin Gardens, Stay Hungry, The Postman Always Rings Twice, and Blood and Wine.
