"Als Polabisch bezeichnet man die Sprachen der westslawischen Stämme, die seit dem 7. Jahrhundert Gebiete des heutigen Nordostdeutschlands und Nordwestpolens besiedelten. Gemeinsam mit dem Kaschubischen (auch Slowinzischen) und dem Polnischen wird es wiederum zum lechischen Zweig des Westslawischen zusammengefasst." (Wikipedia) August Schleicher (1821 - 1868), Sprachwissenschaftler und Begründer der Stammbaumtheorie in der vergleichenden Sprachforschung, veröffentlichte eine Reihe bedeutender sprachwissenschaftlicher Arbeiten, so auch seine hier vorliegende Laut- und Formenlehre. Nachdruck der postum veröffentlichten Originalausgabe aus dem Jahr 1871.
August Schleicher (1821 - 1868), Sprachwissenschaftler und Begründer der Stammbaumtheorie in der vergleichenden Sprachforschung, schreibt im Vorwort: "Ein Buch, welches mit Rücksicht auf die Bedürfnisse der Sprachwissenschaft beflissener Nichtslawen den Bau des altertümlichsten Dialektes der slawischen Sprache darstellt, schien mir ebenso sehr Bedürfnis, als für den Slawen eine sprachwissenschaftliche, vergleichende Bearbeitung des Kirchenslawischen, der Sprache, welche für die richtige Erfassung ihrer lebenden Schwesterdialekte von ähnlicher Wichtigkeit ist, wie etwa das Gothische für die germanischen Sprachen, das Sanskrit für die übrigen Zweige des indogermanischen Stammes."
