It is winter and England's New Forest is in the grip of a vigorous blizzard. Why do summer flowers quickly grow and radiantly bloom for mere seconds during a winter blizzard?Why do the same flowers quickly wither and die with equal speed? Why did the late Mr. Ballantyne continuously speak of such radiance caused by the presence of strange little fairy folk? Why did no one believe him?
1. The Martians are desperate.2. Most are riddled with disease.3. Those that remain are disorganised. The alien invaders are less formidable as they struggle to reach Scotland's border. Some are trying to abandon Earth via towering barrel constructions. This great apparatus can fire lifeboats back to Mars. One such assembly is in Dumfriesshire where a number of Martian fighting machines have been destroyed with others driven back. The importance of the giant barrel forces the desperate Martians to keep attempting the recapture of the giant escape mechanism. But the new government in Edinburgh have other plans. The French professor who escaped Essex aboard the Southend Belle paddle steamer is in Edinburgh. His life was saved by HMS Thunder Child's valiant charge. Now he wishes to do something in return. He has a diabolical plan which he has put before the governing powers. He wants humanity to go on the attack. Something colossal that could bring an apocalypse upon the Martians.
It is late May 1940 and Dunkirk is surrounded. One small pocket of British artillery are by a section of coast in Belgium. Engulfed by the enemy forces, the gunners are presented with a glimmer of hope. Belgium has fallen. France is about to. Yet all the stubborn gunners know they must go for their one outrageous chance. The opportunity grows with the arrival of a French tank called the Errol Flynn. A Char B1 that can face the demands that their quest has in store for them. A battle against odds and a clock that is running out of precious time. Can the combined British and French plan work? Will the thick armoured tank play its part?
Air Mechanic First Class Maloney was too enthusiastic for his own good when working on the WWI F2B biplanes. He learnt everything possible about Morse Code transmitting, clock code referencing and photography during his spare time. All the ingredients for a flight observer. But Maloney did not want to go up in an aircraft and perform such duties. He was happy with his feet on the ground and being a good air mechanic. However, the squadron were suddenly short of observers and the powers that be thought Maloney would make for a good acting observer. Maloney could not side step the mission he was destined for. His twentieth birthday would be a day he would never forget.
Ireland: Summer of 1920 - Father John wanted to keep his village of Cafgarven free from trouble but the surrounding countryside was in the grip of a rebellion against Great Britain's Crown forces. He found himself caught up in the horrid conflict of tit-for-tat murder when two individuals from either side of the struggle came to him for help. One was a Fenian rebel from a decimated flying column; the other was a young English Black and Tan.
The Martians were on the rampage all across Queen Victoria's Britain. Nothing man possessed could stop them. But then the huge fighting machines began to slow down and lumber to a halt. One by one, the Martians inside the giant tripod machines began to die. Soon there were just scattered and failing remnants of the once-mighty tripods wandering here and there among the derelict monuments. Even the red weed was dying as Mother Earth began to reclaim her own. The human survivors became emboldened and they emerged from the hiding places intent on fighting back.
