Del cerro andino cuya meseta terminal separa las vertientes argentina y chilena, manan los dos arroyos que, al engrosar en breve su caudal propio con diez corrientes adventicias, dilatarán en la hoya respectiva su faja sinuosa hasta venir á ser los ríos de Mendoza y Aconcagua. ¡Aquí el rendez-vous de las prosopopeyas y frases hechas! Retórica obliga. Se llega cansado, hambriento, aterido y abrumado por la trasnochada á mula; harto de valles y quebradas uniformemente pintorescos, con la misma a «sierpe de plata» que se retuerce entre peñascos, reverberando al sol sus móviles escamas. Horas hace que no se alzan los ojos hacia las areniscas y conglomerados de la serranía; nos han fatigado hasta las visiones fantásticas que el crepúsculo y la distancia evocan: ruinas de castillos y catedrales disformes cuyos sillares colosales fueran los estratos ondulantes, remedando las estrías verticales de la roca ya góticas columnatas sin bóveda visible, ya juegos monstruosos de órganos para el Juicio final¿con las nevadas cúpulas del Tupungato y Aconcagua sobre el poniente lívido ... No importa: es asunto entendido que, al pisar la cumbre, Perrichón ha estallado en gritos sublimes: «¡Dios! ¡Providencia! ¡Inmensidad! ¡Eternidad! ¡¡Oh!!..» Todo lo cual será redactado, tres días después, en un confortable hotel de Valparaíso, ¡y bien empenachado de signos admirativos!
