Om Ghana, The Rediscovered Soccer Might
Football or soccer is more than a sport in Africa, Europe and Asia. The Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) began the World Cup championship tournament in 1930 with a 13-team field in Uruguay. Ghana made a debut in the 2006 FIFA World Cup qualifiers but they were narrowly knocked out by Brazil. Ghana's historic journey to the 2006 FIFA World CupT finals begun with a comfortable victory over Czechoslovakia, and the United States. Although Ghana did not win the tournament, it is believed that it was the best continental campaign for Africa since Cameroon in 2002. In the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations Ghana finished with a bonze. The Black Stars were runners-up at the 1992 Nations Cup held in Senegal, not to mention Ghana's feat as four-time winners. It must be reiterated that the Ghana national football team, Black Stars have won the African Cup of Nations four times (1963, 1965, 1978, and 1982), making Ghana the second most successful team in the contest's history, after Egypt. Although Ghana only won a bronze in the 2008 Cup of Nations tournament, by all counts Ghana was rated as the best team currently in Africa, having earned their best FIFA ranking rating ever as the 14th best IFA rankings (previous position in brackets): 1. (1.) Argentina 2. (2.) Brazil 3. (3.) Italy 4. (4.) Spain 5. (5.) Germany 6. (6.) Czech Republic 7. (7.) France 8. (8.) Portugal 9. (9.) Netherlands 10. (11.) Greece 11. (12.) England 12. (10.)
