The novel begins where Book III finished; Ursula James has escaped the house, leaving her new girlfriend Suzanne, and boyfriend, Mike, behind; captives to Rachel Penheligon. Meanwhile, Marina, Alicia's favourite, has also sneaked from the house on a personal mission to recover her Mistresses affections. In enslaving Suzanne, Mike and, unsuccessfully; Ursula, Rachel has broken all three of Danielle's rules and has no idea of the consequences that will follow. As she and Imogene work on damage limitation after Ursula's departure, neither of them are aware of Alicia's imminent return.
