Edward Carpenter (1844-1929) selected the title Iolaus to honor the boy charioteer and lover of Hercules. He compiled many of the pieces which comprise modern gay political theory. Originally published in 1902 to silently argue, by the presentation of literary masterpieces of all centuries, for the acceptance of homosexuality.
