Om Iravu sudar
Soodamani in a short story written in 1975 had compared sexual intercourse to a destructive act akin to
crushing a fresh flower. This is a quite different view from her description of sexual intercourse in her
novel Naangaam Aasiramam written in 1972. She had described it as an act 'enhancing the divinity of
the human body'. Soodamani's views on sexual intercourse changed vastly in her novel Iravuchudar and
successive stories. Iravuchudar is all about the pent-up thoughts about purity, buried deep in the heart,
reaching a high-point and exploding one day. In her unique style of narration, Soodamani has created
the character of Yamini as a flame scorching the ills of darkness. Yamini is also the dark-night that many
want to forget quickly. She's also the flame lighting up the night; in fact, Yamini is a creation who is a
mixture of darkness and light.
