This essay will try to highlight the role of Joyce's knowledge of Italian language in the construction of his innovative language After a short introduction in which I indicate the main themes, contexts and theories that were fundamental background to Joyce's work (references to Dante Alighieri, Giordano Bruno, Giambattista Vico, Gabriele D'Annunzio and Filippo Tommaso Marinetti), I will propose an examination of the ninth episode of the Ulysses "Scylla and Charybdis". The goal is to demonstrate how important the triestine experience and Joyce's studies of Italian literature and culture were for his elaboration in which he tries to reestablish the ante-babelic spontaneity and strength of the poetic word.
