Japanese Girls and Women

After a year in Tokyo, American teacher Alice Mabel Bacon (1858-1918) became the first author to explore Japan's class system, cultural history and moral framework through the stories of its women. Her 1891 book depicts a generation of women striving to reconcile traditional expectations with their newly Westernised education.
