Cette opéra-comique en trois actes et quatre tableaux raconte l'histoire de Germain, le régisseur du château de Corneville, qui a été déchu de son titre de marquis à la Révolution Française et devient le chef des contrebandiers. Mais quand il retourne à Corneville, il tombe amoureux de la belle Christine, la nièce de Milord, le nouveau propriétaire. L'opéra-comique est rempli de chanteries vibrantes et de personnages comiques et attachants.
