Meringue

Om Meringue

Abandoned by her husband, June Mooney is in utter despair. With no one to turn to and a third child on the way, her future appears hopeless until she discovers an enchanted recipe for meringue tucked away in the attic. Thanks to a batch of divine meringue pâtisseries, a new chapter in June's life begins with the opening of a French-inspired café called Meringue. As she bakes away her sorrows, the humble restaurant flourishes. However, when June revamps the menu, setting aside the charmed concoction, disaster follows. The magic in the little café dwindles while conflict arises in the family. Soon, June is struck by another misfortune when Harold D'Alembert, an acclaimed French chef, opens an exquisite restaurant right next door. Will Restaurant Meringue survive? Like the pleasures of an epicurean experience, Meringue is a delicious, romantic and whimsical tale about a cookbook inhabited by a spirit and the mesmerizing effects it has on a quiet, little town. That evening, June went out to her garden to pull a few weeds, although her true motive was to spy on her neighbor. She watched him from afar, hauling in boxes and crates. Usually, she felt comfort in weeding her fragrant herbs, but frustration grew within her instead, as she tore away the pitiful dandelions sprouting through the dark soil. Fuming inside, she finally got up, and marched directly over to the physically imposing Frenchman who was coming up the stone walk, towards the back entrance of his restaurant. "Hello, excuse me," June approached Harold abruptly. "I just want to let you know that I'm already serving a French menu, therefore I'm expecting you to serve anything else. Besides, don't be fooled into thinking that the people of this town will choose your restaurant over mine, especially if you try to serve the same foods." She menacingly pointed her trowel at him, still wearing her soiled gardening gloves. "Ah! You are from Meringue! I love it, oui, c'est magnifique... magnifique," he paused to set down the box he was carrying to rub his chin. "It brings back... such delightful memories," he grinned. "I'm warning you," she gave him a fierce look. "Maybe, I will have the pleasure of telling you about these sweet memoirs someday... and, my friend, do not fear my cooking. It is based on la cuisine du terroir, honest and simple meals made of local foods... I never serve the same dish twice in a week." He winked at her, retrieved the box and walked on, leaving June in a perplexed condition. ―Excerpt from Meringue
