This memoir tells the story of an African-American soldier's experiences during World War II, both on the front lines and in relationships. The author describes the challenges of serving in a segregated army and navigating the complexities of race, class, and gender in the United States and abroad. Against this backdrop, he also recounts his heartfelt romance with a fellow soldier and the difficulties they faced both during and after the war.
