Award-winning journalism: When Fishman's essay "Welcome to Refugee High," on which this book is based, was published, it became one of Chicago magazine's most read pieces of the year. It reached media outlets around the globe and inspired several short documentaries, including for Tel Aviv's i24, India's Wion TV, National Geographic, and PBS Newshour. The Week also chose it as "The Last Word" in its November 3, 2017, issue. It was named a finalist for the City Regional Magazine Award for Best Feature of 2017. Fishman's Chicago Reader cover story "Pariahs Amid the Rainbow" won the city's prestigious Lisagor Award for Newspaper Reporting. Her Chicago magazine piece "Can Jerryon Stevens Be Saved?" won the Lisagor Award for Best Feature Story.
Film Option: Fishman's essay "Welcome to Refugee High" has been optioned by State Street Pictures (Mudbound) and is currently being shopped as a television pilot. Director and writer Cherien Dabis (Amreeka; Ramy) is attached to the project.
