Rhythms of Life: An Anthology of Modern Poetry is an intriguing collection of poems that take you on a spirited, poetic journey; exploring different experiences via a variety of perspectives, moods, personas and everyday moments, in ways that reflect rhythmical periods in our lives. Each poem has its natural cadence, flowing like a provocative bird of paradise, and as a compilation, they present a variety of rhythms through different voices and emotions which show a fusion; on both the personal and naturist level. The poems explore human conditions, which can be seen through subject matters that range from; childhood, time, old age, seasons, memory, love, war, wisdom, the heart, the inevitability of death, politics, patriotism, youth and love. Therefore, from these myriad perspectives, the Anthology, which shows the relationship of humanity to nature, is both appealing and thought-provoking. For example, in Rhythms of Life, even the simple passage of time can be seen as malign and the poem entitled Who is He? suggests that at times, humanity seems to be under the control of an external force which conspires against us.
There is also repeated emphasis on the healing power of nature which pervades organic nature, in ways that suggest human life is full of perpetual renewals; seen in its juxtaposition with seasonal cycles. However, the natural environment can be made more complex by social circumstances; as is seen in the poem London. This poem shows how the landscape is embroiled in socially degraded activities on streets, evidenced by the predatory nature of youths with guns and knives.
However, the poems can also bring sunshine to your day, such as in Eating a Julie Mango, which highlights how memory plays its part in recalling the pleasurable and sensuous way of eating a Julie Mango: whilst others in the Anthology such as Ode to the Thames; Brexit; In the Castle of My Hoodie; Don't Cry for Me! and From a Black Mother to her Son, are sobering; seen from reflective, political and contemplative perspectives. Therefore, in this Anthology, I present the "Rhythms of Life" as it reflects synchronicity, individuality, and rhythmical oneness in our universe and in the way we see and do everyday things; in order for the reader to experience pleasure via an understanding and appreciation of poetry.
