This book explores the transition of the Brazilian government from military rule transition to democracy, creating for the first time a pluralistic and democratic political culture. Contributors to this book focus on two themes: how the enormous state apparatus inherited from the military is responding to new demands and how both political elites and the political parties are coping with pressures for change.
