The book takes place in Värmland between 1920 and 1970. Sigge and Lena live in a mostly unhappy marriage. Their relationship is constantly put to the test. During the war Sigge is stationed to guard the Sweden-Norway border in Eda.There this Swedish soldier suddenly discovers a Norwegian girl, Ragnhild, in the company of a young German soldier, Manfred. Both badly injured. The Swedish commanders are puzzled. A girl wearing a norwegian jacket rhymed very badly with the german Nazi's brown uniform. These two young people will forever change Sigge's life. A piece of jewelry representing a four-leaf clover haunts them through the years. Does a four-leaf clover really mean happiness?
