Interpretations of Jihad in South Asia

Why is it that the concept Jihad bears so many different or even contradictory meanings? Varying from endeavor for ethical improvement to holy war, it has been subject to different interpretations since the 18th century. This study focuses on these changing readings among religious scholars, Islamic revivalists, reformers, and radical Islamists in South Asia, providing an intellectual history of Jihad in this region.
