Questo è un opera lirica in tre atti di Umberto Giordano ispirata ad un idillio del drammaturgo francese Xavier de Montépin, che diede il soggetto anche ad una fortunata operetta che debuttò al Théatre de l'Ambigu-Comique di Parigi nel marzo del 1878. Una storia romantica tra un artista e la figlia di un colono, ambientata in un paesaggio idilliaco ma minacciosa a causa delle ossessioni del proprietario terriero. Il triangolo amoroso e la bellezza della musica ne fanno un grande classico.
