An Irish country family in 19th century Ireland tell of their lives in a turbulent and important period in Irish history when Ireland was still a part of the British Empire. We learn of the struggles for Catholic emancipation, the rebellions of 1798 and 1848, the Tithe War, the hedge schools, the foundation of the national schools, famine, plague, evictions, faction fighting and the Irish Brigade in the Papal Wars in Italy.
