Routledge Handbook on Early Islam

This book provides the first definitive overview of the subject of Early Islam. Split into three sections, the first focuses on the key texts and figures of early Islam: The Qur'an, Mu¿ammad, Sunna/Hadith, exegesis, and law. The second.looks at.developments within the nascent Muslim community and its relationship to others, including topics such as the pre-Islamic legacy, relations with Christians and Jews, the formation of an Arab/Muslim polity, and divisions within the religious tradition. The third examines the ways early Islam, that is, the texts, figures, events, social formations, etc. discussed in the earlier chapters, have been reinterpreted in the last century and a half.
