En ny trend har dukket opp i søkelyset hos barn og unge, ettersom hard realisme har blitt et interessant tema igjen. Det antas at flere barn og unge tenker mer selv og ikke nødvendigvis trenger hjelp fra en voksen. Selv om denne trenden inkluderer bøker som kan virke tøffe og ubehagelige for barn og ungdom, kan disse temaene om død, sykdom, sorg og identitet inneholde en interessant forståelse av å lære om seg selv på og omverdenen.
